“My residency at Buffalo Creek Art Center was the breath of fresh air I needed after a year of working alone in my studio during lockdown.. I so enjoyed my very short walk (as opposed to a 20-minute commute on I-95) to the studio from the ranch house, when I would drink in the incredible views of the valley and mountains across the way, before I began my day. The incredible sunrises and sunsets, from the back veranda were such a nice way to begin and end the day. I was inspired by the natural beauty.

During the residency, I intentionally kept the outcome of my work open to allow space for discovery. I chose to work with stoneware clay bodies available on the West Coast, rather than the porcelain I typically use for my figurative sculpture. My approach was experimental and will serve as reference point for my work going forward.

Jocelyn Braxton Armstrong SCULPTURE

It was wonderful getting to know the other artists during my time at BCAC. We had a great group.. We acted as a sounding board for each other as we figured out strategies of how to work in the dry heat. The studio is well appointed and roomy with plenty of workspace to create.

I want to thank Steve Hardy and his wife, Lana, for their vision to develop this unique artist residency. For me, it was restorative, stimulating and challenging. I would recommend this residency for anyone who wants to work intensely without distraction.”
